I’ve been a big fan of northern fantasy, but especially viking sagas, epics and of course the Eda, are there any games that fall into genres similar to the Volsung Saga or The Epic of Ragnar Lodbrok?
THEME: Viking Sagas
Hello! The following recommendations are either based on Norse Fantasy, Viking Fantasy, or historical Norse societies. Some are more realistic than others, but they run the gamut from light-hearted to serious, and from fantastical to realistic.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
9 Lives to Valhalla, by Gem Room Games.
9 Lives to Valhalla is a frenetic, gleefully ultraviolent ttrpg about death metal viking cats earning their seat in Valhalla through glorious violence and death (all 9 of them)!
Nine lives to stalk the earth! Nine times to die with sword in paw! Nine Lives to Valhalla!
You are a death metal viking cat, earning your place in the drinking halls of Valhalla by casting a wake of blood and carnage upon the blighted earth in each of your 9 lives. Guided personally by DEATH, your merry band will leave a wake of ruin ending only at the hands of a truly worthy foe. Find treasures, trade with merchants, mercenaries, or ghosts, and follow DEATH to seek worthy foes, fiendish traps, and ensure your place among the greatest warriors of catkind!
This is absolutely the kind of game you want to pull out for players who want to dive into violence with glee. This is a death-metal dark-fantasy world, with dangerous opponents, a pantheon of cat gods, tons of character abilities, and GM advice on how to design your own foes on the fly. If you want a game that indulges a party of murder hobos and sends nods to the pop-culture tropes of Vikings, you might want to check out 9 Lives To Valhalla.
Ydalir, by Loreshaper Games.
Ullr took something that is rightly yours. He reigns in his court, Ýdalir, and that is where he has taken your treasure. It may be your beloved, a prized possession or tool, or even your honor—and you will get it back.
One player will take on the role of GM. They will guide the saga as it unfolds. They will tell players when to roll, and what the threshold is. The other players will make heroes seeking to reclaim what Ullr stole from them—they may be after the same object or several different things, but getting them back is a shared quest.
This is a one-page bluffing game, in which you don’t have to tell the truth about what you rolled. However, other players can take on the role of Ullr call your bluff. If you lied (or failed), you suffer a Loss, while if you tell the truth, you gain a Focus, which forces other players to tell the truth, or reveal their next roll and gives your player a step up in the future. If you like the idea of characters bluffing their way past a God to get their treasures back, or you just want a small game interacting with Norse mythology, you might want to check out this game.
Runecairn, by Odin’s Beard RPG.
In a long forgotten age, a raging war shattered and devastated the worlds of gods and men. Now green life blooms amidst the ruins of the lost worlds. Wondrous and terrible beings roam the Nine Realms. Civilization stumbles forward, fresh and reaching.
Strap on your bearded axe and linden wood shield, delve into the forsaken barrow and cleanse the draugr within. They will overwhelm you at first so prepare to die. But when you wake up at the bonfire, you'll know what to expect for your next attempt. Parry their attacks, disarm them, and hack them to pieces. Defeat the mad jotunn within and claim the soul remnant they protect.
Death is not the end.
Runecairn: Core Rules is a 44-page, black and white tabletop RPG zine, which includes a Norse fantasy setting, a full game system, and character creation rules for adventures set after Ragnarok destroyed most of the Nine Realms of Norse mythology. Runecairn is based on Cairn by Yochai Gal, with streamlined rules, fast character creation, and gameplay based on exploration and player choice.
This game is designed for the OSR gamer, which means that death is likely and character creation is quick. This game has quite a few supplements that you can pick up to enhance your play, from the Advanced Rules, (solo play, advanced character options), Beneath the Broken Sword (an introductory dungeon crawl), and Wardensaga, a package that contains everything in one place. If you’re interested in a rules-set that is easy to pick up and carries time-honoured nods to the fantasy game, with a Norse Mythology twist, I recommend Runecairn.
Blood Feud, by Bläckfisk Publishing.
Blood Feud is a game about toxic masculinity: certain common attitudes and behaviors among men, that cause great harm to them and to others around them. This is a game about people being nasty to each other and about figuring out why.
It’s also a game about vikings of pre-christian Scandinavia; about honor and blood feuds, courage and brutality, corruption and consequences. Above all it is a game about what it means to be a man in such a world—and what consequences that has on the communities they live in.
The goal of the game is to explore and experience toxic masculinity, while at the same time creating a thoughtful drama about relationships, competition and social consequences. Blood Feud is decidedly different from the other games on this list in that it takes away fantastical elements and focuses on the intertwined relationships of Vikings through a critical lens. It does this using the well-matched Powered by the Apocalypse system, which is a hallmark for dramatic role-players. If you’re interested in Viking life as well as exploring public and private relationships, you should absolutely check this game out.
Iron Edda: World of Metal and Bone, by Tracy Barnett.
Dwarven Destroyers stretch shadows across Midgard, a harbinger of war to come. Brave human warriors abandon clan and holdfast to bond themselves to the bones of dead giants, hoping to push back the Destroyers. Strangers from others lands appear in Midgard, bringing with them strange powers, and tales of war abroad.
Seers advise and divine the future, but the fate of the world is murky and dim. Jarls, thralls, and warriors fight in common cause, shouting “victory or Valhalla!” as they charge into battle. Ragnarok has come, and you live in a World of Metal and Bone. Will you dine with the gods in Valhalla, or dance with the dishonoured dead?
Another Powered by the Apocalypse game, World of Metal and Bone lets you tell stories of brave warriors, Jarls, Bone-bonded giants, and their defense of their holdfasts. Based on Dungeon World, this game includes something that not a lot of PbtA games have - established lore. There’s not much of it, but characters are presented with names that follow the naming conventions of different cultures and locations, and the book begins by presenting the reader with different factions and neighbouring countries.
If you’re interested in this setting but you would like a different system, Iron Edda Accelerated is in the same world but uses the FATE rules system instead. There’s also Iron Edda Reforged, a side-story game about building a neighbourhood community and taking down the gods - although this is less Norse Mythology and more a modern-day post-apocalypse.
Godtale, by Bläckfisk Publishing.
GODTALE is a Norse mythological micro RPG about escapades and rivalries, about cunning and vainglory. You portray aesir, asynjur and vanir of your own creation. Together you go on adventures in the Nine Realms. But each of you wants to be the deity who earns the most glory—not infrequently at the expense of your companions.
Godtale is a game in which you can win or lose. You will compete against your fellow players to gain the most Glory by the end of the game. You do so by overcoming Trials, using your Domains, Attributes, and Possessions to do so. You must also be careful not to accumulate too much Pride, which will negatively affect your dice rolls.
As for the GM, this little game provides a few pieces of advice on running the game, as well as some roll tables to give the characters interesting Trials. Overall, this game is quick, simple, and a great way to establish new myths about the deities of the Norse Pantheon - maybe even a great way to set the stage for another game on this list!
In The Time of Monsters, by Possum Creek Games.
It was the final age — the old world was dying, and the new world was struggling to be born. Every day Ragnarok drew closer, the end of the world heralded by churning seas and raging skies. The gods grew rotten and weak, their greedy eyes sunken into rotting skulls. The great heroes were reduced to grist in the mill of war. It was the final age before all things ended, and as the world-tree rotted, everyone knew … Now is the time of monsters.
In The Time Of Monsters is a tactical combat TTRPG about bloodsoaked heroes vying for power at the end of the world. It's inspired by Norse Mythology, Lancer, and Dungeons & Dragons 4th Edition.
Jay Dragon is more known for games that are diceless or centred on storytelling, but this game seems to be a divergence from this pattern. This is meant to be tactical, it’s meant to be combat-focused, and it carries the familiar character elements of stats, special abilities, and inventory. That being said, characters will also answer questions about where they got their weapons and magic items and what they want in regards to the end of the world.
If you're looking to tell dramatic fables about tragic warriors on a grid while rolling dice and getting big numbers, this is the game for you. If you’re looking for an adventure to drop into this game, you can check out Ullr’s Revenge, a third-party supplement written by Ripley Caldwell.

“I am Amber, a 29 years old Taiwanese girl. I started my running journey since 2014 and Triathlon for 7 Years. I am a scuba dive instructor, love the ocean and mountain, love sharing, and always outside.
The story of how I came to start running, back in 2015, I was still hustling through college, stressing over that transfer exam. One day a mate asked if I'd be down to join this chill running team. They promised good company, cool running spots, and interesting chats. I was curious and thought WHY NOT?
We were rocking the Nike+ app back then, and the organiser was this GPS Picasso, creating awesome shapes on our running routes. So, for my first-ever run, picture this: I'm in a Superman cloak, wearing Nike Air Force kicks (not the best for running), and throwing on some short jeans. We hit the streets of Taipei, everyone vibing high and having a blast. Crazy thing is, I smashed 11km that night!
The next day my legs were screaming, but I couldn't wait for the next run. It was crazy - I never thought I could pull off running that far. It blew my mind how positive vibes could turn things around. The combo of good company, positive energy, and the thrill of running... Life-changing! It's not just about the distance, it's the feeling of accomplishment, those endorphins kicking in, and connecting with awesome humans. And the organiser's GPS art just added a whole new level of fun. And let's talk about my outfit choice – Superman cloak, Air Force kicks, and short jeans – total madness, right? But it added this fun vibe to the whole adventure. Running with a crew in a supportive setting does wonders for your body and mind.
During my study days, I was heavily into dancing, but the demands of the college transfer exam forced me to step away from the dance group because practice sessions often ran late into the night. That's when I discovered running - a more manageable time commitment and a fantastic way to connect with some genuinely cool people always up for an adventure.
Joining the running community opened up a whole new world for me. The folks I met were not only fantastic running buddies but also amazing individuals from whom I learned a lot. Every run became an opportunity to enjoy the moment and soak in the positive vibes. It was a refreshing change, and I appreciated the flexibility it offered in my schedule.
So, from being a dancer to hitting the pavement, I found a new passion that not only kept me fit but also introduced me to an incredible group of people who shared my love for running and adventure.
After running with this group for two years, completing numerous 10k and 21k races, and even conquering the full marathon with them, I had built a network of amazing people. Then, one day, someone in the group came up with the idea of signing up for a triathlon. My immediate thought again was, "Why not? Sounds like a blast. I’m in!" There was just one hiccup - I wasn't exactly a swimmer, especially in deep water. So, I opted for the easier version of the race that allowed me to use a swimming buoy. Once the decision was made I just signed up for the swim course, diving headfirst into my first-ever triathlon training. I was so pumped that I didn't end up using the swimming buoy, and even registered for a 10k run the day after the triathlon race. And you know what? I got hooked. It was mind-blowing to witness all the hard work pay off. I discovered a version of myself I hadn't really met before and realised I was stronger and more capable than I ever gave myself credit for.
One of my highlights has been Cairns IM 70.3 in 2023. All the hard work paid off. 1.9km Swim, 90km Bike, 21km RUN. Swim 40 mins, Bike 3:03, Run 1:56 - 5:47, A massive PB and pure happiness. My past triathlon before this was six years ago, and I finished it in 6 hours and 33 minutes. Back then, my run never went sub-2 hours. Fast forward to now, I achieved a running personal best in the 70.3 distance after seven years of doing triathlons. It hit me – I've never really pushed myself hard and put in the effort like I did this time. Legs were hurting, but my brain was stoked. After navigating through numerous heartbreaks in life and taking a hiatus from training when I first started travelling, I can proudly reclaim the title of Triathlete. Grateful that I'm still capable of stepping onto the course and shining once again.
Queenstown Half Marathon 2023 was another highlight. My first Half Marathon in New Zealand with a PB 1:50h! Got the transfer slot 2 weeks before race, wasn’t really training for it but just keeping fit. The weather was mint as but the run course was beyond my expectations! Thought it would be a flat road but it turned out to be rolling hills and most of them were trails. Most of my time during race was in pain and not very enjoyable. But this race has amazing scenery and reminds me that I have to be stronger!!
Now I am running for myself – not only to meet people but to stay fit, happy, and healthy. I find it nice when I can dominate my time, be dedicated, and disciplined. It's also fantastic to explore a new place through running and give myself a break from the noise in my brain caused by all the realities of life. I've found that keeping up with running is the only emotional outlet to keep my brain fresh and my mind healthy.
Since I've been away from home for years, travelling can sometimes be a bit stressful for me due to the unstable life and loneliness. People around me come and go, and most of the time, I'm always on the move. I have to relocate to a new city and change jobs every few months because of visa limitations, adapt to a new work environment, and face different challenges in each new place. So I enjoy meeting people in a different kind of way - running.
Meeting people through running, runners from around the world all share a similar vibe – they're happy, strong, brave, and have a solid mindset. Regardless of why they run or their fitness level, I respect anyone willing to break their comfort zone, embrace discipline, and I'm genuinely happy to get to know these amazing individuals.
Staying fit makes me mentally stronger during my days wandering around the world, and it makes me feel better and happier when I feel LOST while chasing dreams. I won't stop running, and I aspire to grow stronger, both physically and mentally, continually exploring my limits.”

Navigating Trails: How to Read Maps, Use GPS, and Stay on Course
Embarking on a trail adventure can be a thrilling experience, but it's important to have the necessary navigation skills to stay on course and make the most of your journey. Whether you prefer traditional paper maps or rely on modern GPS technology, understanding how to navigate trails effectively is essential. In this blog post, we will provide you with comprehensive tips on how to read maps, use GPS devices, and ensure you stay on track throughout your outdoor expeditions. So, grab your gear, get ready to explore, and let's dive into the world of trail navigation!
The Art of Reading Maps: 1.1. Understand the Legend: Familiarize yourself with the symbols and colors used in the map's legend. These symbols represent important features like trails, water sources, landmarks, and more. 1.2. Scale and Contour Lines: Pay attention to the map's scale, which determines the ratio of distance on the map to the actual distance on the ground. Contour lines indicate elevation changes and help you visualize the terrain. 1.3. Orienting the Map: Before setting off, ensure your map is oriented correctly by aligning it with the surrounding landscape or using a compass. This will help you understand your position and navigate accurately. 1.4. Route Planning: Identify your starting point, destination, and intermediate waypoints on the map. Plan your route by following trails, avoiding obstacles, and considering factors like elevation gain and difficulty.
Utilizing GPS Devices: 2.1. Choose a Reliable GPS Device: Invest in a GPS device suitable for your outdoor activities. Consider features such as durability, battery life, ease of use, and the ability to load maps. 2.2. Preload Maps and Waypoints: Load detailed trail maps and important waypoints onto your GPS device before heading out. This ensures you have access to accurate information even in areas with limited or no cellular reception. 2.3. Familiarize Yourself with GPS Functions: Learn how to navigate through the menus, mark waypoints, track your route, and set up alerts on your GPS device. Practice using these functions before your trip to build confidence. 2.4. Backup Batteries and Paper Maps: Carry spare batteries for your GPS device to avoid unexpected power drainage. Additionally, always carry a paper map as a backup in case of device failure or battery depletion.
Staying on Course: 3.1. Follow Trail Markers: Pay attention to trail markers, such as colored blazes or cairns, along the route. These markers guide you and help you stay on the designated path. 3.2. Landmarks and Topographical Features: Use prominent landmarks and distinct topographical features, such as rivers, mountains, or rock formations, to confirm your location on the map and ensure you're on the right track. 3.3. Trailhead Signage: Take note of trailhead signage that provides important information about the route, including distances, difficulty levels, and potential hazards. 3.4. Regular Map and GPS Checks: Periodically check your map and GPS device to confirm your progress and ensure you haven't deviated from the planned route. This prevents getting lost and allows you to make necessary adjustments if needed.

.....and the one where he has to get her over the mountains?
I don’t have much on this one yet! In this crazy AU, Aragorn and Arwen aren’t betrothed in Lorien, because unfortunately it burns to the ground first. So they have to escape over the mountains together.
Here’s a chunk…
He likes to hear her talk, likes the little tunnels her mind goes diving down, and the bridges she builds to make her way back to her main point without changing the subject, likes her metaphors both absurd and profound, likes how often she references old books and older lays, and likes the sound of all of it, her voice not high and soft, nor too low, and how often she is near to making herself laugh, nearly as often as she is to making him.
But right now she’s going to fall if she doesn’t shut up, and he puts the back of his hand against her bare ankle and nudges it in to where the toehold actually is. He steadies her there until she finds it and pushes herself a little farther up the cliff.
She says, “Thanks. You doing okay?”
Wish she’d pay attention, but yep. He says, “Can you see the next one?”
“I can, it’s up there by that root. This isn’t as steep as the backside of the Spire, you know. Piece of cake.”
“North face is a better climb.”
“I agree, just had to take a bet. That one place where it overhangs is tricky, you have to make a little leap and—”
The edge is there and she makes a grab for it, but the rotten rock crumbles in her hand. She is too experienced to panic and turn loose with the other but still he slams his own palm into the small of her back, pinning her there against the cliff-face so she will not peel back and plunge down over the top of his head into the gorge. He does not ease up until she finds a better handhold, and uses it to drag herself over the edge. She is laying on her back, one knee drawn up, arms flung out, heaving a little, when he slithers the last ascent and rolls up and sits beside her for a while until his own heart slows back down to a lope.
She says, still somewhat out of breath, “I need to stop talking.”
“Mm.”
“It’s what I do when I’m nervous, I’m sorry.”
“You don’t need to be sorry, you just need to—”
“Pay attention, I know, you’re right.”
“We’re going to be okay.”
“I know.”
Two weeks now they have come north, often driven off-course by the goblins which are thick and bold as flies. Somewhere behind them without even the covering of a shoddy cairn lies the body of Orophin of the Wood, doughty warden of the March, who had hated him brazenly, and at the last stood fast at his shoulder and held the narrow trail, and borne a dozen black darts in his body, and flogged him after the lady when flight alone remained to him, or else to stay and die with his companion, and leave Arwen Undomiel here in the Wild alone.
Her hand lays in the dust, skinned across the knuckles, the nails chipped and broken off and embedded with black dirt. He lifts it. Has he touched her so, without a real need? He cannot remember, their help to one another has become an unselfconscious thing. He steadies her on the trail; she leans upon his shoulder to pour sand out of her shoes; they touch hands delivering the canteen back and forth between themselves; they take turns sitting the watch with their legs brushing together in the dark beneath the covering of their only cloak.
He had held her while she wept, that first morning, and tended to her hurts, but that then needful too.
Now he takes her hand for no good reason but because she frightened him, and because it sits there, scuffed and filthy and nevertheless as lovely as a niphredil, and because he would string his forefather’s ring upon it right here on the shoulder of the High Pass, and to hell with all the wretched consequences.
His eyes fly to her. She is looking at him as if he had spoken the thought aloud. It came upon him like a meteor, blazing and abrupt; he has never in his life allowed himself to think it quite so clearly. She does not take her hand away. Her hair strewn all around her on the stone. She says softly, her eyes very still and very clear, as if she is standing on some precipice gazing out at the air she will soon cast herself into, “Why don’t you, then.”

Foals’ Yannis Philippakis: ‘The internet should’ve killed us’
The wildmen of rock are back with a new album, Life Is Yours. Their frontman talks resilience and the strangest house party ever
Dan Cairns | Sunday June 12 2022, 12.01am BST, The Sunday Times
Tumblr media
You sense quickly that Yannis Philippakis is a stranger to moderation. Never mind the hair-raising legends of havoc at the house parties the 36-year-old lead singer of Foals and his band played in their early days. The giveaway is how Philippakis is staring at my pack of rolling tobacco.
The man who mainlines adrenaline and thinks nothing of diving into the crowd or scaling lighting rigs during live shows is regretting his decision to stop smoking. “It was ridiculous, I was hitting 60 a day,” he frets. “I went to Greece after we finished recording the album with a 30-a-day habit and it just skyrocketed — I was chain smoking. But I can’t just do, say, five a day.”
Heroically resisting the urge to lapse, Philippakis muses on Foals’s longevity. Over the course of six platinum-selling albums and festival headline slots that have the atmosphere of revivalist meetings, he and the alt-rock/pop band he co-founded in Oxford 17 years ago have blazed their own particular trail.
Foals have built — and maintained — a fanatical following that was seeded when the internet was only flickering. They are, the singer suggests, “an anomaly”, a sort of highbrow Coldplay. On their new album, Life Is Yours, you’ll find references to a “Duchenne smile” and ambergris (a perfume ingredient from the digestive system of sperm whales), which are not the sorts of things you tend to encounter in Chris Martin’s lyrics.
Artists two decades into their careers aren’t supposed to be making music as vibrant, fresh and inventive as Foals’ — the more common story is one of steady decline. “We haven’t sold our skin,” the singer says. “That’s kind of rare now. We don’t talk about it, but there is sometimes this feeling of surprise, like, ‘Wow, we’ve got this massive tour coming up.’ It’s been an unusual trajectory. The internet should have killed us off but it hasn’t. Who knows, though, the digital reaper may be just round the corner.”
The band have lost two of their five founding members in the past four years, both apparently amicable partings. The bassist Walter Gervers, who, like the guitarist Jimmy Smith, attended Abingdon, the same private school as Radiohead, left in 2018. Three years later the keyboardist Edwin Congreave quit to do a postgraduate degree in economics. (Which is somehow very Foals; Philippakis abandoned an English degree at St John’s, Oxford, and bought an old Royal Mail van to cart the band around in.)
So Life Is Yours is the work of a three-piece — and sounds, appropriately, leaner and more taut than the two-part, overblown Everything Not Saved Will Be Lost of 2019.
“To me, what was important about the band was the feeling of family, of solidarity,” Philippakis says. “When people leave, it obviously wounds that image in some ways. I’m still figuring out Walter’s departure . . . he was our glue, our Jimmy Whispers.”
Tumblr media

Life Is Yours combines the crisp beats, bright staccato guitar and dance grooves that are Foals trademarks with lyrics that are at once elegiac and escapist. The song Looking High is key, a track Philippakis describes as “clubby and nostalgic . . . But then, within the lyrics, there’s that twist: all the clubs have closed down — you have nightlife, club culture, one of the greatest things about life in Britain, being ravaged by government, Covid, property developers. We’re not there, our friends aren’t there, the place itself is now a ghost.”
You can draw a straight line between the young tyros who used to pack out sweat-soaked Oxford venues such as the Wheatsheaf and the band who will headline Latitude festival next month. The energy Philippakis bristles with helps to explain why Foals are one of the great live acts in this country. They bring the spirit of those riotous early house parties to their national tours, no matter how vast the arenas.
But there is one legendary and decidedly less raucous event from their very early days that they don’t emulate, when a house-party booking went pear-shaped. “There was just one guy with his two mates,” Philippakis says, “and for some reason his mum’s pasta salad was on the table, though she wasn’t in the room. I’ll always remember that plate. I mean, we played a few songs, but when we left we were like, ‘F***ing hell, that’s got to be the strangest house party ever.’”
Yet Foals do occasionally try to play the modern music game, even if you sense that, rather sweetly, their hearts aren’t in it. The band recently launched a hot honey sauce to a recipe devised by the drummer Jack Bevan and named after one of their albums, Holy Fire. Foals as entrepreneurs? No, probably not.
Life Is Yours is out on Friday; Foals play Latitude on Jul 23

hi I have some theories about the Problematic Rock
In my essay for chapter 82, I said that I had settled on a theory of What The Deal Is With Cairngorm.  My thoughts on the subject are a bit all over the place, so in the hope of presenting things in a coherent manner, I’ve laid out my thought process from the past eleven months or so in roughly chronological order, beginning with the nitpick that started it all.  Welcome to my twisted mind, and all that.
For the most part, the way the series applies fantasy concepts to actual geology has been fairly sound.  For example, tourmaline generates an electric charge when heated, so Melon radiates electricity when upset.  Cinnabar the rock often comes out of the ground covered in native mercury, so Cinnabar the character is surrounded by magical floating mercury.  Alexandrite turns red or purple in incandescent light, so the light the Lunarians give off changes Alex’s color and gives them a mood swing to boot.  It’s exaggerated and fantastical, but it’s nonetheless grounded in some nugget of geology trivia which one might find on the back of a Snapple cap.  But, Ghost and Cairn’s condition in the story does not line up with how phantom crystals work, even within the science-fantasy framework we’ve got going here.  At first, I just filed it away next to other inaccuracies such as Antarc shouldn’t be able to trudge through snow without dissolving in a puddle of their own brine, much less dive into the ocean unscathed.  However, if my theory(s) is correct, then this apparent lapse in the internal logic of the story might have in fact been deliberate foreshadowing.  But I’m getting ahead of myself.
First, some context. Phantom crystals form by way of two distinct but related processes:
During a crystal’s formation out of a solution, its growth is temporarily halted for one of any number of reasons.  During this time, dust falls onto the surface of the crystal.  As the crystal begins growing again, these tiny debris become trapped within, and if the rest of the crystal is sufficiently transparent, the included material appears from the outside as the outline of a crystal within a crystal.
The other process to which this term applies involves color zoning, and is a bit easier to explain.  During a crystal’s formation, the chemicals that make up the solution change slightly, and these impurities cause one part of the crystal to become a different color from another part.  If the color zoning is concentric, and the different colors in question are visible from outside the crystal, it can be labeled a phantom crystal.  Ghost and Cairn appear to be this second type.
So here’s what I’m getting at: a phantom crystal is not two separate crystals, in much the same way that the rings in a tree trunk aren’t a bunch of separate trees.  Therefore, it doesn’t make sense for Ghost and Cairngorm to be two separate people, and if they are actually intended to be examples of this phenomenon, it raises some questions.  For one thing, watermelon tourmaline forms via the exact same process of concentric color zoning I described in example number two; since you usually can’t see the pinkish part from outside of the green layer of crystal, it’s not often labeled a phantom crystal, but it’s the same phenomenon nonetheless.  So, why is it that Cairn and Ghost are two different people, but the green and red parts of Melon aren’t?  For that matter, why aren’t the two halves of Euclase two separate people? There’s certainly more of colorless-Euclase than there is of Ghost.  If mere color zoning were enough, then why are Ghost and Cairn the only examples of highly-conjoined-twins amongst the cast?  Unless of course, we weren’t given an accurate picture of how these two came to be, and there’s something fishy going on.
Of course, whether or not this little contradiction is actually meaningful wholly depends on if Ichikawa was even aware of the distinction as she was writing.  As I recall she once said in an interview that she wasn’t very familiar with geology in the first place before she started writing hnk.  But, like I said at the beginning of this essay, this is what got me started down the rabbit hole.  From this observation arose two different trains of thought.   One came to me pretty quickly, but the other took a few months to materialize.
The first idea that popped into my head when I realized that this inaccuracy could have been deliberate was that Ghost and Cairngorm might not be separate people, and there was some split-personality shenanigans going on.  I’ll quickly list the things I think this theory has going for it with some bullet points.
Remember that one time, when Cairngorm referred to Ghost as their “former self?”  And that other time, in the official translation of volume 6, when they referred to Ghost as their “other half?”  That is rather curious terminology for referring to one’s sibling.
That one time in chapter 39, where Cairn repeated Ghost’s sentiment about being “tired of praying” verbatim, and the composition of the panels seemingly called attention to it.
It would serve to explain a certain contradiction in Cairn’s personality: despite their aggressive—and at times violent—demeanor, they nonetheless act like a total doormat in all the ways that really matter.  They live their life according to someone else’s wishes, they’re quick to pass off decision making to others, and they fold under pressure pretty easily.  What if Cairngorm is, in fact, Ghost’s idea of what being assertive is like, without any understanding of what it means to actually be independent or confident?
A common critique of the story is that Ghost’s character was rather perfunctory, and their death felt like a second-rate retread of Antarc’s fate.  Well, if Cairn and Ghost are the same person, then they weren’t actually unceremoniously dropped from the story after all.  Come to think of it, right before they were supposedly taken, Ghost said they wanted to change; what if they actually did?
As many of you have noticed, Ghost is one of the few characters who isn’t ProblematiqueTM .  Doubtlessly, Ichikawa now regrets killing them off before they could do something kinda nasty.  Even Antarc got the chance to cluelessly trample over Phos’s self-esteem before getting turned into road salt.  But, if it were revealed that Ghost was actually the same character as creamed corn, then Ichikawa could drag their good name through the mud with one fell swoop.  (I’m just trying to think from her perspective, guys!  Her cruel, sadistic perspective…)
But ultimately, when I got around to wondering why on earth they would have a split personality in the first place, I found that this line of inquiry raised more questions than answers.  Unlike my second theory, which mostly just raises answers.
(I know I just dumped a big tinfoil hat at my readers’ feet like a cat gifting its owner a decapitated bird, but please keep bearing with me, I’m not even halfway done.)
The idea that I’ve found to be the most fruitful came in the weeks following chapter 75.  I’ve brought up this line from Aechmea multiple times (probably to the point of redundancy,) because it’s the biggest hint we’ve gotten so far that there’s some Cairn-related context we’re not yet privy to.  And the more the narrative keeps reminding us of it—usually by way of Cairngorm bringing it up with varying levels of anxiety—the more it seems to be alluding to something important.  So I got to thinking that whatever my little plot twist was, it would have to account for Aechmea’s cryptic bullshit.  I put forward a couple preliminary ideas in my essay for chapter 75, but I’ve since discarded those in favor of my second theory.
So, somehow Aechmea knew Cairngorm before they came to the moon, and neither Cairngorm, (nor Ghost for that matter,) remembers meeting him.  When I tried to think of how this could be possible, while also keeping in mind my little bugbear about phantom crystals, I developed a theory that’s much more pedestrian by the standards of the hnk fandom.  I am of course, talking about the mysterious artificial gem experiments that the Lunarians conducted.  That sure is a plot element which has been left dangling, huh?  And since no one, least of all myself, believes Stinkmea when he claims that the experiments were a complete failure, it has been a favored pastime of people who write walls of text to speculate on who amongst the cast might have been planted on earth by the Lunarians; e.g. Obsidian, Antarc, new Morga and Goshe… I imagine someone at some point has even postulated that Phos themselves is from the moon.  But, if you pay close attention to how Aechmea, and later, Barbata describe the process by which they attempted to create artificial gems, it lines up strikingly well with what we know about Ghost and Cairngorm, and it also serves to explain the geological inaccuracy I was talking about earlier.
Aechmea describes how the Lunarians tried to create their own gems by grafting pieces of gems they had captured from earth onto artificial bodies, and that they were dumped on earth before being retrieved after they showed no signs of life.  Barbata also mentions it later, in more oblique terms.  He’s speaking vaguely, but his warning to Phos feels a bit odd in its specificity. The use of the phrase “emotionally delicate” also raises my eyebrows a bit.  I may be reading too much into this, but I feel that his hypothetical example is less hypothetical than he’s letting on.  Perhaps, he is in fact referring to a certain someone in particular, who is emotionally fragile, and subsequently lost their sense of self after being subjected to this experiment.  Hmmm…
So here’s what I think went down: once upon a time, probably before the current generation of gems had been born, there was a gem on earth who was just plain old colorless Quartz. I’m going to call them OG!Quartz.  One day, OG!Quartz is captured by the Lunarians, and Aechmea uses them for his little gem experiment, probably with Barbata being the one to carry it out.  He shaves off the outermost layer of OG!Quartz and discards the rest of them. Then, he grafts those pieces onto an artificial body made of black Quartz.  The inclusions from OG!Quartz permeate into the artificial material, and thus Cairngorm is born.  The Lunarians subsequently dump them on earth, at which point Kongou, who may or may not realize what’s going on, picks them up and names them Ghost Quartz, despite the fact that they didn’t come about via that process.
This would explain a lot of things.  If so little of OG!Quartz was used to make Ghost Quartz, they would likely be unable to remember their previous life, or the ensuing events on the moon, for that matter.  And since Cairngorm would be a newborn at the time, they wouldn’t be able to remember Aechmea either, thus solving the riddle of how Aechmea knew Cairngorm before they came the moon.
It would also clue us in to what Aechmea meant by love, why he was quick to swoop in and take advantage of Cairn, and why he kept Cairn’s original arm around.  If they were the one success after a series of failed experiments, it’s possible that Aechmea feels a sense of ownership over Cairn, as if they’re his accomplishment.  (Yikes.)
It would also explain another thing that has stuck in mind.  The way Ghost was taken was kind of weird, wasn’t it?  At the time, the Lunarians were being oddly particular about nabbing Ghost instead of Cairn.  Usually, the Lunarians try to shatter the gems and be done with it, not shave a bunch of little pieces off the outside.  Furthermore, Cairngorm was thoroughly wrecked by the end of that fight.  The Lunarians could have easily grabbed them both and gotten away before help could arrive, but instead, they pushed Cairn off of the vessel and only took Ghost.  If we assume though that Ghost and Cairn are the result of one of those gem experiments, the Lunarians actions during that battle start to make sense.  Perhaps the Lunarians wanted to see if Cairngorm was alive in their own right, or if the pieces of Ghost were just dragging the rest of the body around.  They wouldn’t be able to tell the difference from their distant vantage point.  So, they nabbed Ghost and intentionally left Cairn behind in order to further observe their experiment.
(I should point out that when I say “the Lunarians,” assume I’m referring to Aechmea, Barbata, and perhaps a handful of other unnamed extras.  Aechmea probably doles out knowledge of his obtuse schemes on a need-to-know basis, and I doubt people like Cicada, or Quieta, or Goshe’s gnarly skater friends know anything about this.)
Going back to this page, Cairn’s expression has stuck in my mind.  They’re trembling, and have a fearful look on their face.  By all accounts, even if what Aechmea just said was confusing, it should still be something Cairn would be happy to hear.  But their immediate reaction is one of understated horror.  It’s almost as if they intuited that there was something very wrong with that statement, even if they can’t put their finger on why. This leads us into another question that’s been on my mind which this theory might serve to explain.
In my very first essay about Caringorm, I ran into a bit of a wall when trying to figure out why Cairngorm’s personality is the way it is.  I figured at the time that Cairngorm’s issues arose from having no agency for most of their life, and that their relationship with Ghost was perhaps much less amicable than we were lead to believe.  And while it’s hard to argue that being a prisoner in their own body for most of their life hasn’t messed them up, I don’t think that’s the only thing going on here.  Furthermore, as far as Cairn’s relationship with Ghost was concerned, we haven’t heard anything about it since, which leads me to believe that it’s not where the trouble lies.  While I still stand by most of what I said in that essay—particularly about how Cairn’s dependency complex compels them to treat themselves as a vehicle for someone else’s desires—there’s a major aspect to all of this that I overlooked at the time.  During their brief tenure in the series, Ghost exhibited a lot of the same issues that Cairngorm does now.
The way they talked about living life following Lapis’s orders—as if they were Lapis’s lackey rather than their partner, the way they latched onto Phos so strongly after they showed them the barest hint of interest, their abysmal self-esteem… It all seems eerily similar to Cairn’s issues, even if it manifested in a more muted fashion.  So, why is it that Ghost exhibited some of Cairngorm’s maladaptive coping mechanisms, despite the fact that Cairn should have been the only one of the two who needed to develop them in the first place?
I haven’t exactly put too fine a point on it since I don’t live with the condition myself, and thus don’t want to risk putting my foot in my mouth, but I can’t really elucidate on this in a concise manner while dancing around the subject.  Ever since chapter 68, I’ve been looking at Cairngorm through the lens of borderline personality disorder.  Since they seem to check more and more boxes off the symptom list with each new chapter, I think it’s a useful lens through which to view them, whether or not it’s one that Ichikawa had in mind.  But, BPD generally arises from trauma, to the extent that many psychologists see it as an alternate manifestation of PTSD.  So, for the longest time, I’ve wondered how it was that Cairn and Ghost ended up the way they did.  There’s no clear answer in the narrative at this point.
This brings us to what Barbata alluded to, that the process of trying to create an artificial gem was damaging to the minds of the those who were subjected to it.  If Ghost and Cairn were (re)born as the result of something terrible, something that destroyed their sense of self, it might explain why they both have mental issues that are indicative of past trauma, despite those issues not having any obvious source.  The only other possible source of trauma I can come up with is that the relationship the two of them had with Lapis might have been an abusive one.  But if that were the case, then there should have been some buildup for it in the chapters following 67.  And while Lapis and Ghost have barely been mentioned in the interim, there’s been a whole lot of incremental reminders that Aechmea’s a shady bastard who’s hiding something from Cairn.  Where there’s smoke, there’s probably a fire.
Well, that’s about it.  Thanks for sticking with this to the end; hopefully, I didn’t make too many flagrant leaps in logic.  Ichikawa, if you would be so kind as to confirm my theories, and also let Phos peacefully live out the rest of their days with their snail friends, I would really appreciate it.  See you all in the essay for chapter 83.

Memories
Summary: A handful of Chase’s memories
Warnings: Major CHASE spoilers towards the end. Everything that comes with CHASE.
His son was gripping his pinky as if it was the only thing that grounded him in this new reality.
His son. This tiny baby was his. Holy shit, he had helped make the baby he was holding. Was he even holding him correctly? God, he didn't want to cause him any harm. He's not sure how you obtain the world to an extent you're able to gift it to another. However it is done, he wants to attempt it for this baby boy.
At a loss for words, he momentarily tears his gaze from the latest love of his life. He whispers a watery "Thank you." to his wife. Stacy giggles as she admires father and son. "This wasn't all me, you know." "Yeah, sure." He looks between them again. "You know, I really want to hold your hand right now but uh, I guess he wants to hold mine more."
--- --- ---
"Say Dada." "Mama." He grins. "No, Dada." His son is momentarily distracted by activity in the kitchen. He points towards where his mother is. "Mama?" "Yeah, she's getting your lunch ready. But forget about that for a second. Dada. Go on, it's not that tricky. I know you can do it." Stacy pokes her head around the door. "Is Daddy bothering you again?" "I'm not bothering him. I'm just trying to expand his vocabulary." "How about we teach him how to say 'yum-yum'?" She picks him up from Chase's lap. "Because guess what time it is, sweetie." "Wait until Mummy tries to make risotto. Then we'll see who you love more." "Wait until Daddy is in charge of Christmas dinner." Stacy counters as she settles their son into his high chair. "Touche."
"His first steps will definitely be towards me though." "We'll see." Stacy teases.
--- --- ---
Chase sat somewhat cross-legged in the middle of the toy goal. Several feet in front of him stood his son. The warm weather was holding this afternoon, although a drizzle was set to descend by dinnertime. What better way to take advantage of the decent weather than to play goalie to his son's striker?
"Come on, you can do it. Kick it at me and try to score." "Daddy, you're too big for the goal. It's super easy to stop it." "Ah, that is where you are mistaken. Just because I'm big doesn't mean I'm smart. Look at me, great big dumb-dumb." Chase sticks out his tongue and lets his pupils attempt to converge while pointing to himself. It triggers a fit of giggles in his son. Chase's face returns to normal, pleased by the result. "You're smart, super duper smart even. You just have to show me how smart you are. Now, think about which way you want the ball to go." "That way." He points to Chase's left. "You're not supposed to tell me, silly." "Oh. Um, then not that way." "Okay, buddy." Chase chuckles. "Now kick the ball in that direction."
The little boy takes a couple steps back before pelting the football to the right. Chase makes a show of diving to the left. He acts shocked by the outcome.
"Wow, you really fooled me there." Chase rises to a kneel. "But you scored! Well done, you. That was a great shot. Come here." He holds his hand up. "Up top, buddy." "Can I go tell Mummy?" He asks after smacking his father's hand. "Of course, go for it. Then maybe if you outsmart me and score again, I'll try convince her to let you have some ice cream." "Really?" "Uh-huh." At the confirming nod, he's off. "Mummy! Mummy, I scored a goal and now I'm more smart than Daddy."
--- --- ---
Chase stokes the top stone of the cairn. Oh, hang on, that one has got a little dirt on it. Best to give it a slight brush. Satisfied with the condition of the tower, he retrieves the photograph he's been carrying. With a kiss, he places it at the base.
He loved that holiday. They'd gone to the coast for some reason. He can't recall exactly why right now. Possibly because they could. As good a reason as any. He and Stacy had taught their son how to build sandcastles. God, how old had he been? Two? Three? One thing Chase knew for certain was that the resulting sunburn had been a bitch.
Oh, that smile. He loved that cheeky little smile more than he knew he could ever love anything else. What he'd give to see it in person again.
"This is called a cairn." He wished he could be explaining. "Since ancient times, some cultures have been stacked stones like this as landmarks or burial monuments. When I was your age, we lived near a forest. One day, I was playing hide and seek with my friends when one of them accidentally tripped on one. Ended up going through a brief cairn phase for some reason. Our dog at the time, oh man, he was great... but he was also really old too. Had to put him down in the end. Afterwards, I stole a bunch of rocks and made a cairn at the end of the garden for him. It looked so bad."
If his son was crouching beside him, Chase would laugh at his childhood escapades. But he remains mournfully silent. The only audience he would have had were the forest and the bottle of whiskey he'd brought along. The very one he's currently taking swigs from.
Missing. Simply missing. They were alive until proven otherwise. Even then, Chase is sure he will refuse to acknowledge it. Cold cases have been reconsidered and subsequently solved before.
Regardless of what happens, there is one thing that won't change. He doesn't want to remember. Not when there may never be more memories to be made.

Lonely In Australia On Valentine's Day? 3 Top Places To Meet Singles
Picture this. You have arrived in Sydney and you have only two days in Australia's biggest city. You want to find the Best CBD Product places to remind you of your vacation of a lifetime. But where do you go? Have you ever spoken to someone and gotten the impression they're looking right through you and cannot hear a single word you're saying? Or have you ever found yourself shaking your head when you had just finished making an important point in a conversation and the person you were talking to responded with a comment or question which has been completely off topic and non sequitur? Remember the Big Boys employ the Large Managers. The Big Managers don't get involved in Strata Title Hotels. That's left to the lower ranked managers & the lower ranked developers. But what is hemp? The brief version is this: hemp is a fibrous plant that's farmed for making many products such as textiles, construction materials, oil, food and of course paper. There are quite a few other uses for this, but these are the most frequent ones. Something else you should be aware of is that hemp is closely associated with marijuana. Many folks think they're the same thing, when in fact they aren't. The one big difference between them is that marijuana is saturated in THC (the hallucinogenic compound which makes it desirable for men and women who smoke it), whereas hemp has very low levels of this chemical. cbd gummies near me Wow if that's not something to be proud of I do not know what is! Brisbane has some of the worst public transport in Australia and yet our public transport fares have gone up 71% since 2009. Getting around: Cairns is a rather small place and there is lots to do in the Best CBD Product. However, when you plan on traveling further all transportation links go from the train station situated in Cairns Central shopping mall. It's the centre for buses and for the Queensland rail network. Also, one notable place to point out is the Reef Fleet Terminal - this is where all of the reef cruises and dive trips depart from. It has been cultivated for at least 12,000 years. The ancients knew the basic advantages and relied on it as a fabric harvest for many things. The seafaring folk used hemp for sails and ropes for millennia. As a matter of fact, the word canvass comes from cannibis. It was a necessary crop of the American colonies, and remained a significant crop until the 1950s. Did you know. You have heard the many stories of this rags-to-riches posted throughout the internet and do you know what it was that led them to success? Taking massive action!

The Australian virus has infected us Read the whole story What our customers say A. Schröder We would like to thank you very much for your great planning of our unforgettable Australia holiday. It was the perfect combination of our wishes and expectations. Read the whole story - What our customers say C. However, the most popular time for New Zealand holidaymakers is the southern summer from December to February. All kinds of outdoor activities such as swimming, rafting, sailing, diving, surfing or hiking are possible during these months. However, New Zealand also has summer holidays, so many locals and tourists are on the move. In many parts of the country, nature is in full bloom and the newborn lambs can be seen everywhere. At the same time it is a relatively rainy month with twelve rainy days. I would rather drive around by car or camper myself than take a guided bus tour, but that's a matter of taste. Furthermore, New Zealand is one of the leading nations in sailing.
What does a litre of petrol cost in New Zealand?
Maori culture in New Zealand. Māori are the indigenous people of New Zealand. They call themselves Tangata Whenua and came to the islands more than 1000 years ago from their mythical Polynesian homeland Hawaiki. Today about 14% of New Zealand's total population is Maori.

Neg Sparkle #4
Tumblr media
A friend told me this story. His father joined the merchant navy. He was in some far off exotic dive on shore leave, soaking up the atmosphere. A fight broke out. Sailors versus whoever. It had all the brio of a John Ford comedy donnybrook. The young fellow jumped up, eager to join the fun, and did what he'd seen a hundred times in the movies: snatched up a chair and swung it at the nearest combatant.
The chair hit the guy but did not fragment into matchwood like the breakaway props used in movies. Nevertheless, there was a distinctly audible "crack." The guy he'd hit fell to the ground and did not get up.
My friend's dad ran back to his ship and hid there until it sailed.
Movies have taught us lots of things that aren't true. Or are only partly true. The idea that violence is fun and has no major consequences has been a persistent film fantasy: I would bet that the number of films depicting criminal assault as something that will achieve your goals and bring about no serious repercussions is higher than the kind showing devastating reprisals, prosecution, destructive unintended consequences.
Of course I don't blame movies for all the violence in the world, I blame humanity, society. that kid from the tower block next door who punched me in the face and left me angry and scared for a year. "Movies hold a mirror up to life," we're told, but it's a glass of the funhouse variety.
A better argument was Kubrick's, when he suggested that movies influenced human behavior much like dreams could: occasionally, a psychotic person will act out something based on a dream, or a film. I guess the censorious-minded could complain that a dream is the product of one's own unconscious (filtering and garbling the information fed into it by the world) whereas a movie is a direct outside influence, someone else's dream injected into our heads through our eyes and ears, and if it's a sick dream then we're now infected by it. "He put his disease in me," moans Isabella Rossellini in Blue Velvet. Still, if we're sane, we should know "It's only a movie." Until we find ourselves in some Malaysian barroom brawl, a situation familiar only from old movies, where we might expect, in the heat of the moment, movie rules to apply. Or if we wake up, like F.W. Murnau, to find the car that we dozed off in is now crashing headlong down a steep hill, and we act like a movie hero and throw ourselves dramatically from the vehicle -
- and fracture our skull on a post, as the car trundles slowly to a halt, everyone inside perfectly unharmed.
Every time I've been punched - and I'm glad to say that it's happened a vanishingly small number of times since school, a surprising thing since I'm a critic - I've been struck (ow!) by how unlike the movies it is. Michael Haneke says of his (leaden, didactic, obvious) Funny Games movies that he was trying to show that violence is, in reality, "unconsumable." That doesn't mean anything to me. What I've felt more is that violence hurts, which movies aren't really set up to evoke - we can have the outward signs of pain, the blood and groaning, but that really depends for effect on our empathic relationship to the victim - and I've also felt a really horrible sense of shame. Whether this is on account of my failure (my constant failure) to live up to movie-star standards and deck my assailant with a right to the jaw, or a more general feeling of failure to be macho, I don't know. I think, somehow, with the absorption of a blow, we somehow absorb the guilt of the person hitting us. We feel we deserve it. The only movie where I've felt the shame or receiving a punch is the aforementioned Blue Velvet, whose portrayal of violence is all over the map but it does get at that feeling of being to blame, as if the impact of a fist imparts our enemy's hatred right into us.
A solution occurs to me about how to safeguard against the influence of movies: if you find yourself in any situation familiar only from the cinema screen, resist the urge to respond to it like a movie character. You've probably been lied to. Thus, if everyone around you suddenly starts singing and dancing in a seemingly spontaneous yet elaborately choreographed manner, whatever you do, DON'T JOIN IN.
